About this Constellation ShortList
No new technology since the Internet itself has excited so many pundits as has blockchain. Launched just nine years ago, blockchain is the underlying platform for the Bitcoin digital currency, which took the payments industry completely by surprise. Partly because of the sheer novelty and partly due to sweeping generalizations made for its security properties, blockchain is thought by many to have countless applications beyond payments.
Blockchain mania has largely settled down. With experience and sharper analysis, the inherent limitations of the original blockchain have become apparent, and the future is rather more clear. A great many “Synchronous” – or Distributed – Ledger Technologies (SLTs) have been inspired by blockchain; R&D continues apace and, at many levels, on fundamental algorithms, service delivery, and applications. As the field continues to evolve, one feature is shared by all important blockchain spinoffs: they all help to orchestrate agreement on some property of a complex set of transaction data. Hence, Constellation Research has introduced the label Synchronous Ledger Technologies.
SLTs remain highly complex. Constellation advises early adopters of these technologies to follow the work of large research consortia or laboratories and to be cautious with the many startups that have launched special-purpose applications. The big ledger labs and managed service providers have the necessary resources and skills to perform patient, diligent requirements analysis and detailed cryptographic analysis. This Constellation ShortList presents the leading services and labs able to help most businesses evaluate and adopt SLTs in a safe and responsible manner.
Constellation considers the following criteria for these solutions:
- Deep technology skills, in computer science, business applications and systems integration
- Resources - both human and capital
- Realistic, practical objectives for these technologies; well explained
- Sound processes, top-down design and application lifecycle management
- Community engagement, research integrity, and quality of publications
