About This Constellation ShortList™
Any relational database management system (RDBMS) that’s available as software can be run on premises or in private clouds. Software can also be deployed and run on cloud infrastructure services, but that approach doesn’t deliver the same agility, simplicity and administrative savings as database-as-a-service (DBaaS) offerings.
This Constellation ShortList presents Constellation’s pick of RDBMSs that are available both as software and as database services across multiple public clouds. The combination gives you the best advantages of cloud computing while avoiding lock-in and fostering hybrid-deployment and cloud portability. The name of this list has been changed from “Hybrid- and Cloud-Friendly” to “Hybrid- and Multi-Cloud” to reflect growing acceptance and understanding of this term in the marketplace. Availability as a service on multiple public clouds has been a core criterion of this ShortList since its inception. There have been no vendor-selection changes to this list since Q1 2018.
Constellation considers the following criteria for these solutions:
- Available as software for on-premises or hybrid-cloud deployment
- Available as a cloud service on multiple major public clouds
- Cloud services are supported by the cloud provider or RDBMS software provider
- Database software provider supports its own cloud service, offering service guarantees and a single source for support
