About This Constellation ShortList™

The portfolio of products that employees use at work has always been influenced by the applications people use in their personal lives. Early AOL email accounts lead to corporate email. Personal blogs showed brands the need for corporate blogs to connect with customers. Wikipedia provided a model for how people can work together to create knowledge based inside the company. Facebook introduced social networking, which led to dozens of enterprise social networking vendors.

While “enterprise chat” tools (e.g., Microsoft Skype, IBM Sametime) have been around for decades, today’s new generation of messaging applications, including Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and SnapChat, are influencing the way employees want to connect, communicate and collaborate. Employees are looking at these tools as a way to reduce the use of email and hopefully feel less overwhelmed.
