Soccer (or football) is the most popular sport in Germany, Europe, and the planet. Deutscher Fußball-Bund (DFB) has more than 7.5 million members. The highest class of competition is the Bundesliga, which is operationally and commercially managed by Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). As its core mission, DFL makes sure to organize German professional football and on a commercial side to provide its Bundesliga broadcast partners with a state-of-the-art, top-quality media product including innovative, advanced statistics. Seven years ago DFL started to move first capacities on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud, culminating in the signing of a technology partnership between DFL and AWS in January 2020, which is when DFL chose to modernize its on-premises data centers entirely and move its game statistics generation, digital infrastructure, and more to AWS. This case study describes how DFL leverages AWS for a superior fan experience, lowers production cost for matches, supports its broadcast partners better, and managed to lower overall IT cost by moving to the cloud—all while becoming the leading Big 5 league when it comes to digitalization.
