Jon Richter is Chief Sustainability Officer at MetLife where he leads efforts to ensure that MetLife’s sustainability and corporate responsibility initiatives advance the company’s business objectives.

As the lead of MetLife’s Global Sustainability function, Jon established the foundation for MetLife’s sustainability strategy and oversees reporting efforts, including development of MetLife’s award-winning corporate responsibility report. Under Jon’s leadership, MetLife obtained its first ever listing on the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the FTSE4Good index. MetLife also obtained its first-ever “100 Best Corporate Citizens” listing by Corporate Responsibility Magazine and the new reporting strategy developed by his group drove increases in MetLife’s Bloomberg ESG ranking to 2nd in the industry – up from 10th.

Jon has over 20 years of experience working at Fortune 45 companies across the financial services, pharmaceutical and consumer products sectors. He has both a depth and breadth of expertise in sustainability/CSR, communications, corporate reputation and market analytics. Jon is a well-regarded strategist, adept at helping companies maximize sustainability/CSR efforts and enhance brand and reputation to gain a competitive business advantage.

Prior to joining MetLife, Jon was Senior Director of Corporate Reputation at Pfizer, the industry’s #1 pharmaceutical company. Between 2004 and 2012, Jon held several roles in corporate communications and market analytics culminating in the management of the Corporate Reputation Team and ensuring a data-driven approach to reputation/brand strategy.

Jon worked at Altria Group, then the parent company of Kraft Foods, Miller Brewing and Philip Morris in the Strategy & Social Responsibility Dept helping the company and its subsidiaries assume leadership roles on challenging industry issues such as youth smoking prevention, childhood obesity, underage drinking and drunk driving. He also supported development and launch of the company’s new corporate identity.

Prior to his work at Fortune 40 companies, Jon has worked at market research firms and for non-profit organizations focused on social purpose.
