The Project

As CEO and President of Klick, Leerom Segal spearheaded the development of a revolutionary management tool called Genome. A custom-built intranet with a full suite of tools aimed at managing time, budgets and people, Genome replaces e-mail, timesheets, spreadsheets, memos and office gossip (amongst other things) by harnessing big data and social technologies, and has been the key competitive advantage that has allowed Klick to grow an average of 30% every year in its 15 year history.

The Technology

Metrics Matter

In the past 10 years, Klick has seen its efficiency skyrocket as a result of Genome. From 2003 to 2007, there was a 29% increase in employee efficiency (total revenue/total employees). That seemed impressive at the time, but since 2007, with over $5 million invested in Genome, we have seen a phenomenal 1611% increase in productivity per employee. Genome isn’t just about efficiency though. Our employees are amongst the most engaged in the country, and we consistently are ranked as one of the top employers and best managed companies (Deloitte, AON Hewitt, Great Places to Work).

Disruptive Factor

Henry Ford said, “If I’d ask the people what they wanted, they would’ve said faster horses.” Many modern management tools are just electronic versions of artifacts like the letter, the punch clock, the memo and the ledger. Genome harnesses the data-driven and social technology used in online experiences like Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, eBay and Match.com and applies them to how you work. We solved the problems that businesses face - managing time, money, projects and people - but we did it in a way that’s customized to the employee, focuses on performance over risk management and incorporates analytics into traditional soft-skill pursuits like performance management and learning.

Shining Moment

Klick measures time against tasks, and six months ago, we started to notice that people were billing less and less time and fewer tasks were being completed per project. We ran the numbers based on employee tenure, department and project, and there didn’t seem to be a correlation. Our COO posted to Genome asking employees to remember to bill their time, and in 48 hours, 56 employees commented on the post. It turns out that few small features were unintentionally making it difficult to create new tasks on a project and bill time. We were able to quickly identify the solution, rectify the problem, and billable percentage on projects returned to its previous rate within a few weeks.
