As the global pandemic has challenged us all in both our professional and personal lives, I’ve been especially grateful this past year to be working at CarMax, which has such a supportive culture for learning and innovation. For 19 years in a row we’ve been recognized as one of Fortune Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For®.

As Executive Vice President and Chief Information and Technology Officer, I strive to balance my deep-rooted technology expertise with a passion for collaborating with others. By partnering with senior executive colleagues, our CEO and Board of Directors, I’ve had the privilege of leading CarMax through its significant digital transformation in recent years. Today, our innovative Product and Technology teams truly operate like a digital-native company.

In my current role, I oversee digital innovations, all technologies and product engineering, delivering revenue-generating products and solutions that drive our competitive advantage forward. Our high-performing technology teams have won awards for their leading-edge digital innovation work, and together we have fostered the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that infuses all areas of this business. We have re-platformed major technologies, developed world-class supply chain capabilities, and elevated CarMax’s cybersecurity posture. Most importantly, we’ve empowered our customers to buy or sell cars on their own terms – whether that’s remotely from home, at our 220+ stores nationwide, or in a seamless combination of both.

I was honored to be cited in Peter High's latest book ("Getting to Nimble: How to Transform Your Company into a Digital Leader") as part of the inspiration for the book's title. During an interview in 2016, we talked about why it was so important to position CarMax technologies to be "nimble, agile and responsive" for a future of unpredictable challenges. Who could have imagined the events of 2020, when our ability to pivot to omni-channel customer service would be so critical?

Before joining CarMax in 2012, I served as vice president of IT for BJ’s Wholesale, where I led teams developing the company’s e-commerce capabilities, transforming supply chain management and advancing its data science capabilities. I’ve held executive roles in companies ranging in size from startups to Fortune 500s across the retail, travel, hospitality, finance and technology industries. As one of the first five employees to join startup TravelCLICK (which ultimately sold for $1.5 billion), I launched the technology team that built the organization’s products and technologies.
