Darío Gil is Senior Vice President and Director of IBM research, one of the world’s largest corporate research labs composed of over 3,000 researchers at 19 locations on six continents advancing the future of computing. He leads innovation efforts at IBM, directing research strategies in areas including AI, cloud, quantum computing, and exploratory science.
Under his leadership IBM was the first company in the world to build programmable quantum computers and make them universally available through the cloud.
An advocate of collaborative research models, Gil co-chairs the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, which advances fundamental AI research to the broad benefit of industry and society. He also co-chairs the COVID-19 High-Performance Computing Consortium, which provides access to the world’s most powerful high-performance computing resources in support of COVID-19 research.
Gil is a trustee of the New York Hall of Science and has been a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
Gil was elected NSB Chair in May 2024, serving until April 2025 when he stepped down to serve as Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy.
As the National Science Board’s first industry leader in 30 years, Gil championed the NSB’s call for new, multi-sectoral partnerships and strategies for the U.S. science and engineering enterprise and through his leadership, the Board engaged with industry, philanthropic, and other leaders to develop ideas, such as a new National Defense Education Act, to meet the nation’s STEM workforce needs in critical areas.
