Not long ago, many employees’ resumes included their typing speed and skills such as "proficient with word processing and spreadsheets.” But a very different set of skills is required in today’s digital workplace. Now, people need to work across time zones and language barriers. They need to be available almost any time, any place via mobile or wearable devices. They need to know how to create interactive content using social media and live-streaming videos. People need to move beyond boring slide decks and reports and instead visualize data patterns and derive insights to guide more informed decisions. Today’s top employees don’t just do their own jobs, they also embrace the role of company advocates and act as unofficial sales, marketing and customer support staff. Today’s employees even need to recognize that some colleagues are not even human, as artificial intelligence and personal digital assistants become part of our everyday workflow.

SAP Sapphire Day #2 Keynote Recap

We had the opportunity to attend Sapphire in Orlando, held from May 17th to 19th in Orlando. The Day #2 keynote is traditionally about product, and so it was also in 2016.
 
 
The keynote was divided across the three board members Rob Enslin, Bernd Leukert and Steve Singh. Take a look at my musings on the event here:

S/4HANA has traction  - but is it enough? Robert Enslin shared what he called the ‘digital imperative’ to become a digital enterprises, where SAP provides the digital core with S/4HANA. Enslin shared that over 3200 S/4HANA licenses have been sold, 800 projects are implementing and over 160 customers are live. That’s good progress over the year, but not too much given the vast install base of SAP. I asked Enslin and Leukert on what may hold back S/4HANA adoption – and their view was in general, that all is well as S/4HANA adoption has surpassed expectations. Enslin said SAP has now to ramp up implementation resources and training, and roadmaps for customers, something to expect by end of Q2. Leukert shared that S/4HANA has made the HANA Enterprise Cloud (HEC) one of the faster growing products. Brave answers from both board members, but in my view it is clear that S/4HANA adoption - especially in public cloud, remains a challenge for SAP. 
 
HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) and PaaS debut in Sapphire keynote – For the longest time I have been wondering what holds SAP executives back from mentioning HCP in keynotes… well no longer the case – as Leukert spoke about PaaS and HCP multiple times. HCP was key in a demo (shown by legendary SAP demo man Ian Kimball) on manufacturing cars and in an (how else could it be in 2016) an IoT demo. Leukert did not stop there and went through the 3 core HCP scenario of Extend (SAP apps), integrate (SAP and 3rd party apps) and Create brand new applications. And HCP was the core of Leukert’s presentation – as HCP Integration capabilities are now the standard SAP integration platform between S/4HANA and all the other SAP SaaS properties.

The network apps vision gets a healthcare perspective - It was for Steve Singh to close the keynote, with refreshing thoughts, like thinking what best practice will be best practice in the future - not what is being done right now. Obviously connectivity is key for network applications, so he spend time on the topic of connectivity to the user, 3rd parties and SAP (I reversed the sequence to a better one IMO), all done via microservices and HCP (again!). The big news of his keynote was the announcement of a healthcare initiative, starting with a medical record. Certainly a connected application with a lot of potential as network application. SAP went so far to even invest in a healthcare player, benefits analytics vendor Castlight (see here).  
 

MyPOV

A good keynote by the three board members, each picking a specific area. The Nestle CIO conversation was certainly a highlight of Sapphire and should become a school book example for customers on how to behave on stage at a conference. He wasn't shy to mention the good, the bad and the ugly - very well done. 
 
On the concern side we have the S/4HANA adoption. To a certain problem this is a challenge of SAP's making, since this is the largest disruption since SAP customers moved from R/2 to R/3. And then lower operating costs made enterprises move to R/3 as soon as SAP was ready to provide the R/2 scope...  Today the value proposition to move is more challenging, as the cost advantages are not tangible, the cloud is uncertain and often (still) faced with concern and SAP has not provided the full / similar scope of the Business Suite. One could argue that SAP will never have to deliver the same functionality in the cloud era, but customers are concerned that they maybe missing out on something that is very important to them. Unfortunately customers cannot articulate too well often, what is really important to them, too. 

But overall a good keynote and key progress with (finally) mentioning and positioning HCP, an the GA of HANA VORA, the Spark based Hadoop / BigData capabilities that SAP announced late summer of last year. Both are crucial to help customer adoption, solve the integration challenge and keep SAP at the table when enterprises select vendor for next generation application platform selections.

First Take – Google I/O 2016 – Day #1 Keynote – Enterprise Takeaways [From the Fences]
It’s a busy week in May and I missed being in person in Mountain View for the Day #1 keynote of Google I/O due to another conference, incoventiently located in Florida, but that gave me a chance to watch the livestream recording on the flight back.
 

Instead of rehashing all announcement – here are my Top 3 takeaways for the enterprise, so take a look:

A good start of I/O for Google. The event has the format of the 2015 edition of I/O - full focus on Android, no distractons, no moonshots, the message is clear - build Android apps on the Google (Cloud) Plaform, using differentiators like speech recognition, artificial intelligence and virtual reality (more of a future). 
 
When Google misses a platform - like for chat - it is in the good position to 'just' create one - with Allo and Duo. Both have an uphill battle to really get the clicks, attention, typing, talking of the users - as there are many, more popular as longer introduced chat products. What is clear for enterprises that are consumer facing - it's time to look at the chat / bot / conversation frameworks. Too much eyes and investment is on this right now, and the risk to be late and left out key business, assuming all this will work and will be widely adopted, is simply to big. 
 
It's good to see that Google is doing clear housekeeping on Android, improving performance, adding features. And the approach to virtual reality is very consistent to the overall Android approach - device diversity across many headset and phone makers. We now have three very different approaches how to tackle the VR / AR future across Facebook, Google and Microsoft - so it will be interesting to watch how this pans out. NetSuite grows up – CEO Nelson shared a dazzling number of stats how large NetSuite has become, largely in technical terms, nonetheless impressive. And NetSuite is well on the way to becoming a 1B$+ software company, there are not too many out there who are in this illustrious club.
 
Best Practices Innovation – Nelson focused on what enterprises needed to do in the age of digital transformation and what NetSuite is doing to help them, obviously tying this into key new capabilities of NetSuite: 
 
  • Intelligent Order Management will help enterprises to fulfill orders, across channels, an important capability given NetSuites’s recent push into omni-commerce.
  • Suite Billing across all different business models will be supported by NetSuite. President McGeever coined the new capability well with ‘if you can sell it – we can bill it’. Given the number of billing partners, I am curious on the reaction out of the partner ecosystem in the next weeks.
  • More global capabilities – NetSuite will keep investing into more global capabilities for its OneWorld product, a good move. .
 
paaS comes to NetSuite – NetSuite has always done a good job maintaining its platform, e.g. allowing customization from the start. But it never went far to court developers and encourage enterprises to build larger, more strategic functionality on top of NetSuite. That is changing, with a first, small developer area being established at SuiteWorld, and even more importantly it has gotten into PaaS with a little ‘p’ via the Suite Development Framework (SDF). [I refer to a PaaS with a little 'p' to a development platform that only / predominantly allows for extending or integrating an existing ERP application, versus a development platform that enables building stand alone enterprise applications].
 

MyPOV

A good SuiteWorld event for NetSuite. The vendor is making the right moves to energize the ecosystem, and keep customers happy. An accelerated path to implementation, stopping the gap between what was demoed and what was really developed is a vital and valuable strategy in the cloud era.
 
My concern in NetSuite operating for (maybe too) long on a 'mature' technology stack has been addressed high level with moves towards Hadoop processing, machine learning capabilities (a start) and better system configuration.
 
Now NetSuite needs to show it can really grow an ecosystem, create an open marketplace that creates the synergies needed to create such an ecosystem. It was also good to see that NetSuite keeps investing into good housekeeping - around performance improvements and new functionality. All this addresses potential medium term concerns very well, and NetSuite remains a vendor that is likely to make the shortlist for an enterprise that is looking for a complete, cloud based ERP suite.

SAP and Microsoft expand partnership to accelerate digital transformation in the cloud

SAP and Microsoft expand partnership to accelerate digital transformation in the cloud

It is SAP’s annual user conference that is happening in Orlando, so it’s the time of the big announcements, and SAP did not disappoint, having Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella join SAP CEO Bill McDermott on stage. 

 
 

So let’s take the press release apart in our custom style – it can be found here (also check out my overall take on the Day #1 keynote – here):
ORLANDO, Fla. — May 17, 2016 — SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: “MSFT”) today announced joint plans to deliver broad support for the SAP HANA® platform deployed on Microsoft Azure, simplify work through new integrations between Microsoft Office 365 and cloud solutions from SAP, and provide enhanced management and security for custom SAP Fiori® apps. This announcement was made at the 28th annual SAPPHIRE® NOW conference.
MyPOV – A good summary, trying to match it in brevity one could say – SAP finds it’s IaaS platform with Azure.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and SAP CEO Bill McDermott will take the stage together at SAPPHIRE NOW today to discuss the expanded partnership that will help organizations use the cloud to drive innovation, agility and enable new ways to work.
MyPOV – Yes they did – in a good conversation moderated by a SAP master of ceremonies, it was clear that both CEOs want to make this partnership work,
“At Microsoft, we are focused on empowering organizations to advance their digital transformations,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “Together with SAP, we are bringing new levels of integrations between our products that provide businesses with enhanced collaboration tools, new insights from data and a hyper-scale cloud to grow and seize new opportunities ahead.”
MyPOV – Good quote from Nadella, tying in what Microsoft brings to the table with Office, BigData and Azure – all for helping customers through digital transformation.
“We believe the IT industry will be shaped by breakthrough partnerships that unlock new productivity for customers beyond the boundaries of traditional platforms and applications,” said McDermott. “SAP and Microsoft are working together to create an end-user experience built on unprecedented insight, convenience and agility. The certification of Microsoft Azure infrastructure services for SAP HANA along with the new integration between Microsoft Office 365 and cloud solutions from SAP are emblematic of this major paradigm shift for the enterprise.”
MyPOV – Equally good quote from McDermott, but interesting to see the emphasis on user experience. Using the ocean liner metaphor it looks like SAP is on the ‘sun deck’ and Microsoft closer to the ‘machine room’ – both important places, and synergistic for both vendors.
 
New Deployment Option: SAP HANA on the Microsoft Azure cloud
With SAP HANA on Azure, organizations across all industries will be able to deliver mission-critical applications and data analytics on a global scale with enterprise-grade security and compliance. Working together, the companies are certifying SAP HANA to run development, test and production workloads on Microsoft Azure, including SAP S/4HANA. These new offerings for SAP HANA are built to handle customers’ largest and most demanding workloads.

MyPOV – Bringing HANA to Azure is a good move for both vendors, as SAP gets an IaaS platform, and Microsoft gets load from the enterprise. Barring details, it may point to a hasty defined partnerships, it would be good to know which instance types will be available for customers, how to migrate to them etc. And by definition when HANA runs, S4/HANA can run, too – equally, more details needed here.
Early adopters of this new offering, such as Coats, Rockwell Automation and Nortek, have already experienced the benefits of deploying SAP HANA on Azure. According to Sujeet Chand, senior vice president & chief technology officer from Rockwell Automation, “The Microsoft Azure platform provides us the scalability, security and level of services needed to confidently run our most demanding SAP HANA and Big Data applications. We are excited to be an early adopter of running SAP HANA on Microsoft Azure since it is an important capability in helping us realize our vision for The Connected Enterprise and advanced data analytics.”
MyPOV – Always good to see when vendors follow customers, even better when customers are already using the joint offering. It is not clear though why Coats Rockwell Automation and Nortek moved to Azure – vs an on premises install or vs. running HANA in the SAP cloud. Databases by their very nature cannot be elastic (see an early musings post here) even though SAP discovered elasticity from data federation later (my musings here). Both vendors will have to make the value proposition of their joint offering more tangible.
Cloud Services Integrations: Public Cloud Solutions from SAP and Office 365 
Every day, millions of business users work in Microsoft and SAP® solutions, creating documents, reading e-mails, filing expense reports, invoicing vendors and more. New integrations between the companies will combine Office 365 communications, collaboration, calendar, documents and other data with cloud solutions from SAP, including Concur, SAP Fieldglass®, SAP SuccessFactors®, and SAP Ariba® solutions, helping employees improve their overall productivity.
MyPOV – Good to see that both vendors move their long term partnership around Office to the cloud age – but this time not only integrating the classic ERP scenarios, but also the newer SAP offerings of Concur and SuccessFactors. In the keynote both vendors showed a call out to Concur from Office, and vice versa, a Leave of Absence request from SuccessFactors into Office.
 
At SAPPHIRE NOW, Microsoft and SAP will demonstrate several of these integrations between Office 365 and cloud solutions from SAP. These new capabilities will be available starting in third quarter of 2016, with plans to release additional integration features in the future.

MyPOV – Always good to see near term deliverables – the question is though, how will the cloud make it different. Previous partnerships – also announced at Sapphire – e.g. on Duet have gotten more than quiet in recent years. Why it will be different this time (it’s in the cloud?!) needs to be explained.
 
Flexibility in the Cloud: Management and Security of Custom SAP Fiori Apps 
SAP will enable its customers to build and deploy custom mobile hybrid SAP Fiori apps on SAP HANA Cloud Platform with an open standards plug-in framework. As part of this framework, customers can build apps that can be managed, deployed and better protected with Microsoft Intune. Using the cloud build process as part of SAP Fiori, cloud edition, app publishers will be able to embed Microsoft Intune management capabilities in their apps, leveraging the same capabilities used by Office 365 mobile apps. The integration is expected to be available in the third quarter of 2016. At SAPPHIRE NOW, SAP will demonstrate this end-to-end capability as part of SAP Fiori, cloud edition.
MyPOV – Another synergy area to explore – using Microsoft Intune as MDM for mobile apps built by Fiori. As SAP has no native MDM offer, good to see the plug in architecture for mobile Fiori Apps.
 

Overall MyPOV

The Microsoft and SAP partnership goes into the cloud era, overall probably we are nearing a double digit number, from support for Windows NT in early days, SQL Server in the late 90ies etc. Even Nadella brought up a discussion between former CEOs Gates and Plattner at a Sapphire conference… so there is a lot of (good) history between the two vendors. And partnering makes sense for both Microsoft and SAP, though both need to make a better job in regards of the benefits, and why (e.g. for Office) it is different this time. And customers surely want to learn more about cost / licensing and pricing. To be fair it is early days – so stay tuned, and Sapphire is still young.

The biggest potential implication is the SAP HANA / S4/HANA deployment on Azure. Microsoft needs load that fuels Azure post the Office365 migrations, so going after the most uniform, single vendor load in the enterprise – SAP – makes tremendous sense. The partnership does not solve the challenge that SAP has, that customers are more slowly than fast adopting the move to both HANA and S/4HANA, something SAP is trying to address this Sapphire, so stay tuned on the topic. In its most extreme form, the partnership could be the beginning of SAP abandoning its own IaaS plans with SAP Cloud. SAP never had the same IaaS ambitions like e.g. Oracle, but this partnership could be pulling a page from the Infor playbook (where a public cloud deployment is always on Amazon AWS). But that’s too early to call, but would also mean that SAP will ‘leak cloud $s’ – as the infrastructure payments would go to Microsoft. 
 
That this partnership has potential and its respect in the industry can be seen by the fact that Amazon AWS was motivated to ship its own press release on SAP customers running (also in production, HANA mentioned but mostly older SAP products, but no S/4HANA) on AWS (see here). The question now is – will SAP move up the stack and focus on PaaS (with Hana Cloud Platform) and SaaS (…) or will it invest into a SAP Cloud IaaS (project Monsoon), as currently most SAP cloud runs on SAP’s built or acquired infrastructure. For now we already know the SAP cloud future is going to be multi cloud for the future, running and supporting its own cloud and Azure (for now).

So some key decisions ahead from SAP, hoping to get some more clarity this week at Sapphire, stay tuned.

Around this time last year Aptos and their leadership team were still under the Epicor banner, after close to a year as an independent firm Aptos hosted their first user conference. Fortunately for me I was able to head back to Las Vegas for the fourth time in 6 weeks – this time I didn’t test my luck at the blackjack tables. Being in Las Vegas seemed to be appropriate as the investment firm Apax Partners is gambling on Aptos and their leadership team to be successful in a very competitive retail landscape. Time will tell if the gamble will pay off…but first some reactions to the conference:

  • It is about the people – at the end of the day, regardless of what business you are in, people buy from people. Maybe one day when bots have taken over they will purchase from each other and we will be left to fend off Skynet. Not only do we buy from other people, but the biggest driver for happy employees are the people we work with and for. Aptos is taking a refreshing take on this, emphasizing the importance of culture and people. The investors in Aptos took to main stage to reinforce this, stating that they were making an investment in the business but also the leaders, from CEO Noel Goggin on down. Noel also emphasized the importance in the team he has built to manage the growth and opportunity for Aptos. This focus on the people is refreshing…and at the end of the day business is about people working with and dealing with other people.
  • Leaning on a legacy of cloud – the cloud is no longer an enigma but is firmly entrenched as the preferred vehicle to deliver software. Not simply because it lowers the total cost of ownership (TCO) but today it is starting to show its true business value. Allowing for retailers and others to quickly scale whether in terms of product growth of geographical expansion. A number of the customers we visited such as Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Nike were looking to Aptos to help empower their global expansions – this was made easier due to the cloud-based solution. Other retailers such as Tumi were looking to lean on the cloud-based solution to have a much more dynamic and flexible inventory system. Truly tying together their inventory whether in the store, storage room or distribution center. The cloud is here, the cloud is the preferred vehicle for product and the cloud allows greater business value.
  • Further up to the customer or further back into supply chain? So where can Aptos go from here? Granted they have plenty of opportunity within their existing client base as well as closing net new opportunities. But is there a play for Aptos to push further back into the stack and provide their customers with greater views in the sourcing and manufacturing portion of their supply chain? Or move even deeper to the omni-channel needs of the consumer, building on their acquisition of ShopVisible, placing a bigger bet on eCommerce world where the likes of Demandware are present? They have shown an ability to build out the necessary assets, for example QuantiSense brining more powerful analytics to their portfolio. This will provide even greater insights into the customer demands. For Aptos to truly reach its potential we feel they will need to think through some of these strategies, whether they partner or develop their own solutions that is up to Noel and his team to figure out.

Thankfully what happens in Vegas isn’t staying in Vegas for Aptos. They come of out of a successful user event with the wind at their backs. Noel and the team have carved out a nice space to play in. However there are many fierce competitors out there, their honeymoon period is long over. The team is in place and with some strong customer stories it is up to Aptos to step up and really push their story.

If you were to place a bet, Aptos seems to have some favorable odds. But as we all know, nothing in Las Vegas is a sure thing!

Event Preview - Google I/O 2016

Later this week we will see Google's key developer conference, Google I/O start in Mountain View, so it's time to bring thoughts in order around what to expect.
 
So take a look at my musings:

A key event for Google, first of all we will have to see if this will be a Google I/O in the format of the 2015 edition, which was focussed all over Android, omitting the broad coverage of the previous editions. Regardless of that it will be important for Google to keep developers focussed on the target, build more Android applications, and get more differentiation from Google Cloud Platform for them. No surprise - as shared at Google Cloud Platform - those differentiators are around Machine Learning, Analytics and Big Data. Google Now on Tap was going to make them more tangible for developers, but the relatively small uptake of Android M makes innovations like these less widely available. Backward compatibility of new features that Google is likely going to announce around Android N will be key. And lastly it will be all about generating load for Google Cloud Platform - may it come from Android or new innovations. It will be an exciting Google I/O. Stay tuned.

Personal Information: What's it all 'about'?

For the past few years, a crucial case has been playing out in Australia's legal system over the treatment of metadata in privacy law. The next stanza is due to be written soon in the Federal Court.

It all began when a journalist with a keen interest in surveillance, Ben Grubb, wanted to understand the breadth and depth of metadata, and so requested that mobile network operator Telstra provide him a copy of his call records. Grubb thought to exercise his rights to access Personal Information under the Privacy Act. Telstra held back a lot of Grubb's call data, arguing that metadata is not Personal Information and is not subject to the access principle. Grubb appealed to the Australian Privacy Commissioner, who ruled that metadata is identifiable and hence represents Personal Information. Telstra took their case to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, which found in favor of Telstra, with a surprising interpretation of "Personal Information". And the Commissioner then appealed to the next legal authority up the line.

At yesterday's launch of Privacy Awareness Week in Sydney, the Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim informed us that the full bench of the Federal Court is due to consider the case in August. This could be significant for data privacy law worldwide, for it all goes to the reach of these sorts of regulations.

I always thought the nuance in Personal Information was in the question of "identifiability" - which could be contested case by case - and those good old ambiguous legal modifiers like 'reasonably' or 'readily'. So it was a great surprise that the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, in overruling the Privacy Commissioner in Ben Grubb v Telstra, was exercised instead by the meaning of the word "about".

Australia's Privacy Act (as amended in 2012) defines Personal Information as:

"Information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable: (a) whether the information or opinion is true or not; and (b) whether the information or opinion is recorded in a material form or not."

The original question at the heart of Grubb vs Telstra was whether mobile phone call metadata falls under this definition. Commissioner Pilgrim showed that call metadata is identifiable to the caller (especially identifiable by the phone company itself that keeps extensive records linking metadata to customer records) and therefore counts as Personal Information.

When it reviewed the case, the tribunal agreed with Pilgrim that the metadata was identifiable, but in a surprise twist, found that the metadata is not actually about Ben Grubb but instead is about the services provided to him.

Once his call or message was transmitted from the first cell that received it from his mobile device, the [metadata] that was generated was directed to delivering the call or message to its intended recipient. That data is no longer about Mr Grubb or the fact that he made a call or sent a message or about the number or address to which he sent it. It is not about the content of the call or the message ... It is information about the service it provides to Mr Grubb but not about him. See AATA 991 (18 December 2015) paragraph 112.

To me it's passing strange that information about calls made by a person is not also regarded as being about that person. Can information not be about more than one thing, namely about a customer's services and the customer?

Think about what metadata can be used for, and how broadly-framed privacy laws are meant to stem abuse. If Ben Grubb was found, for example, to have repeatedly called the same Indian takeaway shop, would we not infer something about him and his taste for Indian food? Even if he called the takeaway shop just once, we might still conclude something about him, even if the sample size is small. We might deduce he doesn't like Indian (remember that in Australian law, Personal Information doesn't necessarily have to be correct).

By the AAT's logic, a doctor's appointment book would not represent any Personal Information about her patients but only information about the services she has delivered to them. But in fact the appointment list of an oncologist for instance would tell us a lot about peoples' cancer.

Given the many ways that metadata can invade our privacy (not to mention that people may be killed based on metadata) it's important that the definition of Personal Information be broad, and that it has a low threshold. Any amount of metadata tells us something about the person.

I appreciate that the 'spirit of the law' is not always what matters, but let's compare the definition of Personal Information in Australia with corresponding concepts elsewhere (see more detail beneath). In the USA, Personally Identifiable Information is any data that may "distinguish" an individual; in the UK, Personal Data is anything that "relates" to an individual; in Germany, it is anything "concerning" someone. Clearly the intent is consistent worldwide. If data can be linked to a person, then it comes under data privacy law.

Which is how it should be. Technology neutral privacy law is framed broadly in the interests of consumer protection. I hope the Federal Court in drilling into the definition of Personal Information upholds what the Privacy Act is for.

In the leadup to the B2B Marketing Leaders Forum APAC 2016, I took the opportunity to speak with GE’s Vice President of Brand & Communications for GE Australia & New Zealand, Emma Rugge-Price about B2B content marketing and what it means to move from “interruption to interaction”.

Emma Rugge-Price: Our approach developed out of a shift in thinking in 2012-13 on the back of GE’s global growth strategy. We asked ourselves how we could become a global company rather than just a multinational company. A core part of that is building brand awareness in each market around what takes place in that market.

So we started out with locally developed creative above the line campaigns. It’s expensive to do that, but not just expensive –  it’s challenging to be true to the brand.

At the same time, the media world was being disrupted, opening up new opportunities for creative content development and distribution. We launched a global media manifesto in 2013, which challenged us all to ‘think like a publisher’. This drove our content strategy.

Gavin Heaton: B2B marketing is often seen as B2C’s unsexy cousin. But GE has been bringing a cool factor to their content program – what is the secret?

Emma Rugge-Price: B2B may appear unsexy but it can also be very cool. Maybe it’s B2C’s SMARTER cousin, able to find compelling ways to influence what are often long and complex sales cycles.

Our media manifesto challenges us to shift our marketing focus from ‘interruption to integration and interaction” and it’s one of the themes of my presentation at the B2B Marketing Leaders Forum.

We have been co-creating content with publishers locally to reach our audience where they are consuming information, entertainment and media so that we are part of the conversation on the issues that matter to Australia. And, because GE works across so many critical industries, we bring substance and authenticity to those issues and those publishers. We augment that local content with what is often surprising and always innovative global content that showcases the brand with a-ha moments. This means that we can adapt big brand content, combine it with local content and business opportunity – to connect the dots for our customers and our business.

I think the secret to cool is that we like to be first – the copycats are rarely the cool ones. This means first with content ideas but also channels like SnapChat, WeChat, even Facebook back in the day.

Gavin Heaton: ROI is always a constant question for B2B marketers. How can marketers think differently to connect content to the bottom line?

Emma Rugge-Price: In B2B the sales cycles are long and the deals are complex, so you don’t get “click to buy” opportunities available to B2C. Our approach has been to create a halo around the customer as part of the sales process. For example, we used our content strategy to support positioning and business development in renewable energy to great effect. We partnered with the AFR to create some fantastic content and drive a dialogue for the industry which supported our local business strategy. It’s the holy grail – moving from content to the bottom line.

SAP Sapphire Bill McDermott Day #1 Keynote

This morning SAP's Sapphire user conference kicked off in Orlando with the traditional CEO keynote.

 


Always tough to pick the Top 3 takeaways - but here you go:

Empathy is the new Leitmotiv - 2 years ago Bill McDermott used 'simple' as key messaging umbrella for SAP, today he switched it over to customer empathy. He had the heads / leaders of Ariba, Concur, Hybris and SuccessFactors including former CTO Clark on stage - all stating how much SAP has done already in regards of empathy. 

Digital Boardroom - In a follow up to last year, we got walked through the latest version of the SAP Digital Boardroom, again with the statement that it was used 'just a few days ago'. Always good to see vendors drinking their own champagne, but in my view the Boardroom is too much about visualization and too little about insights and what ifs that are triggered by software, not the humans. 

SAP & Microsoft - In a major partnership commitment, Microsoft CEO Nadella was on stage, sharing his view in a panel with McDermott on how business best practices are changing in the digital age. Good to hear their views - would also be good to have learned more on the new partnership announced today (see here), which basically means that SAP has found its first leading IaaS outlet to run both HANA and S4/HANA. Will be interesting to see what the benefits for customers are and what the implications are for SAP's own #IaaS ambitions.

A good start for Sapphire, a good keynote with McDermott, that instead of slides used a conversational format and not less than three panels to get multiple point of views on stage. The Microsoft partnership has the biggest impact - if executed. It is good news for customers, and setup well - as SAP needs to defined and build out its own IaaS capacity and that requires a lot of Capex, on the other side Microsoft is looking for load to keep expanding Azure. The biggest load with conformity that is out there is the load generated by SAP, so a good objective. But a lot of execution needs to happen to make the customer succeed, and that's what matters the most.
