We had the opportunity to attend Informatica’s Informatica World conference in San Francisco, held from May 23rd till 26th 2016. The conference is well attended with over 3000 participants, coming from customers, prospects and the ecosystem.

Earlier this week we were surprised by a partnership announcement of Salesforce and Microsoft. The announcement has implications in both regards of best practices where SaaS based vendors may run their computing load, and market share potential in the highly competitive IaaS market. For Salesforce (and all SaaS) customers, this maybe a reflection point in regards of where and how SaaS workloads will be run in the future, so worth some analysis.

We had the opportunity to attend Sapphire 2016 in Orlando, the event was the usual large show, with similar attendance like last year, an amazing, probably the best in the industry, show floor and massive partner presence.

Today, May 24th 2016, CSC and HP Enterprise (HPE) announced that the HPE Services unit would be spun out of HPE and merged with CSC which recently spun out its government business. This surprising deal is being positioned as a merger, but as indicated by the Press Release from CSC, with the headline address of Virginia, and Mike Lawrie as CEO, it is clear that this is fundamentally an acquisition, albeit by the smaller of the two providers.
A number of mid-sized logistics providers are putting themselves up for sale in an indication that binary market dynamics—go big or go specialized—are rearing their head in this sector. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the trend:

The biggest potential implication is the SAP HANA / S4/HANA deployment on Azure. Microsoft needs load that fuels Azure post the Office365 migrations, so going after the most uniform, single vendor load in the enterprise – SAP – makes tremendous sense. The partnership does not solve the challenge that SAP has, that customers are more slowly than fast adopting the move to both HANA and S/4HANA, something SAP is trying to address this Sapphire.
