Moonshot AI released Kimi K2.5 in a move that delivers visual coding abilities and introduces K2.5 Agent Swarm, a beta that can direct an AI agent swarm of up to 100 sub-agents to complete tasks.

The Kimi K2.5 launch is a fast follow to the release of Qwen3-Max-Thinking, another open source model that performs as well as the leading large language models.

As noted previously, the lead between frontier models is quickly collapsing versus open source options. Enterprises need to pay attention to what's happening as LLMs commoditize quickly. Incidentally, Qwen and Kimi are backed by Alibaba as China takes aim at US artificial intelligence leaders.

Kimi K2.5 has four modes, K2.5 Instant, K2.5 Thinking, K2.5 Agent and the K2.5 Agent Swarm. That last one is the most notable since agentic AI is what most companies are chasing. Kimi K2.5 can self-direct an agent swarm without predefined subagents or workflow.

In its release note, Moonshot AI compared Kimi K2.5 to OpenAI's ChatGPT 5.2 and noted: "Across three agentic benchmarks—HLE, BrowseComp, and SWE-Verified—Kimi K2.5 delivers strong performance at a fraction of the cost."

The focus on Agent Swarm is worth a look for performance as well as architecture. According to Kimi: "An agent swarm has an orchestrator that dynamically creates specialized subagents (e.g., AI Researcher, Physics Researcher, Fact Checker) and decomposes complex tasks into parallelizable subtasks for efficient distributed execution."

Here's a look at how K2.5 Agent Swarm spawns agents and subtasks to shorten the time to complete the task.

Other things to note with Kimi K2.5:

  • The model can turn conversations into front-end interfaces and interactive layouts. Kimi K2.5 can code with text but is tuned for coding with vision.
  • K2.5 Agent has a set of preconfigured tools for software engineering. The model is paired with Kimi Code, the company's coding product.
  • K2.5 Agent is also aligned with completing office work end-to-end.
