In 2012, California generated more than 25% of the patents granted by the United States Patent Office (USPO) with almost 35,000 patents granted to citizens or organizations from California; the USPO granted a meek approximate 8,500 patents to citizens and organizations from New York, and as few as 32 from Alaska.
Startling? Not so much, but hold your horses, in 2012 Japan filed almost twice the amount of patents filed by citizens and organizations from California with the USPO granting almost 53,000 patents to citizens and organizations from Japan, Germany at approximately 15,000 (about half that of California), and the United Kingdom at approximately 6,000 (around the amount form New York).
Many Big Data and online businesses proceed on a naive assumption that data in the "public domain" is up for grabs; technocrats are often surprised that conventional data protection laws can be interpreted to cover the extraction of PII from raw data. On the other hand, orthodox privacy frameworks don't cater for the way PII can be created in future from raw data collected today. This presentation will bridge the conceptual gap between data analytics and privacy, and offer new dynamic consent models to civilize the trade in PII for goods and services.
Storytelling is hard work. It’s intricate, nuanced and can be expensive. But we crave it, know it and hold good storytelling and storytellers close to our hearts. After all, we all have books that we’d fight for. But in this world of digital media, simple tools for content creation, video production, worldwide publishing and distribution, we are confronted by so much fog. Static. Unimaginative or unengaging material. There are words but fewer stories that we can get our teeth into.

Right?I mean, no matter how hard I fought it, how bad I wanted not to – I have to do it.I have to enter the battle for the definition of “engagement”.What did you think I was talking about? You see, that’s the problem.

Constellation shares with its clients the fourth annual groundbreaking survey of CIOs later this week. The 2014 survey interviews respondents about their priorities by CIO persona. Constellation identified infrastructure, integration, intelligence, and innnovaiton as the four personas of the next gen CIO in 2011.
Survey results show that while CIO’s prefer to spend more time on innovation projects, most CIOs must spend their time battling the reduction of cost in IT delivery. Here’s a recent presentation I delivered with AMD’s Isabel Merlano at Microsoft Project Conference 2014. In this session, we shared common scenarios on how the different approaches taken by project managers and Project Management Offices (PMO) could make an organization’s project management environment complex and challenging for the different project stakeholders. We then showcased how Microsoft portfolio and project management solutions can be maximized to address varying pain points around schedule management, resource management and project reporting.

For the value it creates, SharePoint can cause eDiscovery and information governance headaches if proper planning does not take place. Last week saw widespread attention to a bug in Apple's iOS operating system which rendered website security impotent. The problem arose from a single superfluous line of code - an extra goto statement - that nullified checking of SSL connections, leaving users totally vulnerable to fake websites. The Twitterverse nicknamed the flaw #gotofail.
There are all sorts of interesting quality control questions in the #gotofail experience.
With a bunch of exciting new members joining up on the eve of the RSA Conference, the FIDO Alliance is going from strength to strength. And they've just published the first public review drafts of their core "universal authentication" protocols.

Why did Facebook develop EdgeRank? Are you one of those brands spending hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars on creating content for social media interactions? Facebook themselves admits the average brand page only reaches 16-17% of its fans. Data from PageLever shows that for brands with millions of fans, even less of their fans see the content. They estimate the content only reaches ~3% of their fans. Why is this so? It’s because of an algorithm, EdgeRank, that calculates what posts to filter out.
