Executive Summary

Introduced by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in 2016, Amazon QuickSight is a cloud-based analytics and business intelligence (BI) service that has steadily matured over its eight-year history. Although the service initially delivered basic data visualization and dashboarding at an attractive price point, QuickSight has steadily gained features and functions, notably including BI reporting and augmented analytics capabilities; flexible embedded and consumption-based licensing options; and, most recently, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) features.

QuickSight is differentiated from analytics and BI rivals in being a highly cost-competitive, AWS-native cloud service, offering tight integrations with other AWS services, such as Amazon Redshift, Amazon Athena, and Amazon SageMaker. One essential upgrade, demanded particularly by larger organizations, was the 2022 addition of optional paginated BI reporting with scheduling and distribution capabilities. The latest innovations include Amazon Q in QuickSight, an April 2024 GenAI-based upgrade and replacement of the QuickSight Q natural-language (NL) query and explanation feature introduced in 2021.

This Offering Overview report provides an in-depth look at Amazon QuickSight, identifies key differentiators, examines functional capabilities, and considers the platform’s strengths and weaknesses. Technology buyers should use this report to evaluate Amazon QuickSight for implementation.
