OpenAI raises $122 billion, touts $2 billion in revenue a month

OpenAI raised $122 billion in funding and now has a valuation of $852 billion.

In a blog post, OpenAI said it is generating $2 billion in revenue a month. OpenAI is arguing that its growth in revenue and users justifies the premium. The company said:

"OpenAI was the fastest technology platform to reach 10 million users, the fastest to 100 million users, and soon the fastest to 1 billion weekly active users. Within a year of launching ChatGPT, we reached $1B in revenue. By the end of 2024 we were generating $1B per quarter. We are now generating $2B in revenue per month. At this stage, we are growing revenue four times faster than the companies who defined the Internet and mobile eras, including Alphabet and Meta."

According to the company, the round was led by Amazon, Nvidia and Softbank with participation from Microsoft and a bevy of institutional investors ranging from Blackrock to Blackstone and Fidelity. OpenAI added that it raised more than $3 billion from individual investors via ETFs managed by Ark Invest.

OpenAI also added that it expanded its revolving line of credit to $4.7 billion.

Key takeaways from the funding announcement from OpenAI include:

  • OpenAI argued that compute is its strategic advantage and that fuels R&D, product development and delivery at scale.
  • In consumer AI, OpenAI has 900 million weekly active users and more than 50 million subscribers.
  • The ads pilot had more than $100 million ARR in less than six weeks.
  • Enterprise revenue will reach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026.
  • OpenAI's APIs process more than 15 billion tokens per minute.
  • Codex has more than 2 million weekly users with monthly growth of 70%.

Not surprisingly, OpenAI said the funding will go to compute. The company added that Nvidia is the foundation of its infrastructure but has broadened its base of suppliers across clouds and GPUs.

Going forward, OpenAI touted its "unified AI superapp." OpenAI said:

"Our superapp will bring together ChatGPT, Codex, browsing, and our broader agentic capabilities into one agent-first experience.

This is not just product simplification. It is a distribution and deployment strategy. By unifying our surfaces, we can translate advances in model capability directly into user adoption and engagement. Our consumer scale becomes the front door for enterprise usage, as familiarity in daily life drives adoption at work. At the same time, a single product surface allows us to improve faster, ship more coherently, and capture more of the value created by agentic workflows."
