Meta to deploy AMD GPUs, CPUs and take stake in chipmaker

Meta said it has inked a multi-year deal with AMD to deploy multiple generations of AMD Instinct GPUs as well as CPUs and AMD Helios racks. Meta also has an option to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD common stock as the companies deploy 6 gigawatts of infrastructure.

The Meta-AMD deal lands just a few weeks after Meta announced plans to deploy Nvidia GPUs and integrated infrastructure. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the AMD deal is "an important step for Meta as we diversify our compute. I expect AMD to be an important partner for many years to come."

Meta said in a blog post that the company is taking a portfolio approach to its AI infrastructure and diversifying vendors. That portfolio will include multiple vendors as well as Meta's custom silicon. The approach is similar to what OpenAI and Anthropic are doing by using Nvidia as well as custom silicon from Google and AWS.

One major part of the deal is that Meta will use custom AMD Instinct GPUs to optimize for Meta workloads.

As AI agents begin to proliferate, inference efficiency will be prioritized. Meta said its AMD deal also includes AMD EPYC processors. For AMD, the Meta deal is a big win as it tries to compete with Nvidia's GPU footprint. "This multi-year, multi-generation collaboration across Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs and rack-scale AI systems aligns our roadmaps to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient infrastructure optimized for Meta’s workloads," said AMD CEO Lisa Su.

AMD said the deal will drive revenue growth and be accretive to non-GAAP earnings per share.

Key points of the deal include:

• The first Meta deployment will begin in the second half of 2026 based on custom AMD Instinct MI450-based GPU and 6th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs running ROCm software in the AMD Helios rack-scale architecture. AMD and Meta have developed Helios racks through the Open Compute Project.
• Meta will deploy multiple generations of AMD's Instinct and EPYC processors. Meta will be a lead customer for 6th Gen AMD EPYC CPUs codenamed Venice and Verano.
• Meta's vesting of AMD shares begins with the initial 1 gigawatt of shipments and further tranches based on milestones on the way to 6 gigawatts.
• Vesting for Meta is also tied to AMD's share price and technical and commercial milestones.
