OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work, rolls out GPT-5.6 model family
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, which embeds Codex in ChatGPT, to get a wide range of work done. The company also rolled out general availability of its GPT-5.6 models.
With moves, OpenAI is looking to close the gap with Anthropic's Claude Cowork. ChatGPT Work also moves its core web, mobile and desktop apps toward superapps. And Codex now will be exposed to a wider audience.
ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, which is designed for multi-step tasks, reasoning and creating deliverables.
On a webcast, OpenAI walked through finance use cases such as month-end budgets, marketing campaign briefs and marketing collateral. ChatGPT can also continue project work streams with scheduled tasks.

ChatGPT Work will be available in Pro, Enterprise and education plans. Plus and Business plans will get ChatGPT Work within days. In the ChatGPT desktop app, Chat, Work and Codex are available on every plan tier. The desktop app can work on local files and apps.
Other key points:
- The Codex app will merge with the new ChatGPT desktop app.
- ChatGPT Work will have plugins to connect to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive and SharePoint as well as other tools.
- OpenAI also launched Sites in ChatGPT. Sites turn work or ideas into interactive sites and web apps.
- ChatGPT Work uses the governance and security policies in ChatGPT Enterprise.
GPT-5.6 family
OpenAI also launched the GPT-5.6 family including its Sol flagship model, Terra, which is a balanced model, and Luna, which is designed for cost efficiency.
The company previously rolled out the model sin limited preview.
As with the initial limited preview announcement, OpenAI emphasized token efficiency. Ultra mode calls up a team of AI agents to work on tasks.
OpenAI said GPT-5.6 will be fully available over the next 24 hours. OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $30 output. Terra is $2.50 input and $15 output. Luna is $1 input and $6 output.
During the launch webcast, OpenAI executives delivered the following takeaways:
- The models in GPT-5.6 are designed for multiple use case and Sol is being used internally to post-train other models. OpenAI was going for balance of capability, speed and cost.
- ChatGPT Work is designed for cross-tool workflows and multiple use cases across finance, HR, marketing and other functions.
- The ChatGPT Desktop App brings the company closer to your desktop and local files and can leverage computer use.
- OpenAI is betting that its hosted sites and interactive experiences can be a ChatGPT Work differentiator.
- The launch aims to shift ChatGPT from answers in chat to a general purpose work and creativity engine.
