IBM launches compact z17 mainframe, IBM LinuxOne 5 systems
IBM launched a compact z17 system with single frame and industry standard rack options to make the mainframe more amenable to tight data center spaces.
The company rolled out new IBM z17 and IBM LinuxOne 5 configurations in single frame configurations as well as rackable options.
IBM launched the z17 mainframe last year and included AI tools and processors designed for AI inference workloads. The system has been a hit and drove infrastructure revenue growth of 12% in 2025 and 15% in the first quarter of 2026. IBM Z revenue was up 51% in the first quarter.
According to IBM, the new IBM z17 and IBM LinuxOne 5 configurations support up to 82 cores and 18 TB of memory across two processor drawers. The new configurations are designed to enable enterprises to comingle mainframes with standard data center gear to reclaim space and improve energy efficiency.
Key details include:
- IBM z17 single frame is a fully packaged mainframe in an IBM rank with power distribution units in an enclosed container.
- IBM z17 rack mount enables customers to install IBM Z components into an industry-standard rack.
- IBM LinuxOne Rockhopper 5 is a multi-drawer LinuxOne system for high-density workloads with on-chip AI acceleration confidential computing and post-quantum cryptography. The system comes in single frame and rack-mount options.
- IBM LinuxOne Rockhopper 5 rack mount and Express have an 18U configuration.
IBM also launched new software and management tools including IBM Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxOne that includes Terraform and infrastructure as code, IBM COBOL Elevate for Z/OS to optimize COBOL applications on IBM z17, post quantum cryptography as standard and IBM Crypto Discovery & Inventory capabilities.
