Boomi to buy Lunar.dev, eyes intelligent prompt and model routing

Published May 13, 2026

Boomi said it will acquire Lunar.dev in a move that aims to bring intelligent model and prompt routing and governed agent connectivity to its platform.

Lunar.dev has a gateway that secures and governs all AI applications and agents. Lunar.dev offers rate limiting for LLM traffic, data sanitation for prompt and payload transformer as well as LLM model routing and custom AI metrics collection.

The purchase signals where Boomi is headed--intelligent model routing in addition to its broader AI platform.

Speaking during his Boomi World keynote, CEO Steve Lucas outlined where Boomi is placing its bets. You should listen given Boomi has been ahead of the enterprise AI curve.

Lunar.dev will help Boomi build out its intelligent model routing, which will increasingly revolve around real-world economics. Lucas said open weight models are catching up to proprietary models to the point where frontier models will commoditize. Enterprises will do what they always do--follow the money and returns with more open models.

Enter model routing.

"A crazy idea is that you keep your data, you still get those benefits, and you help build your own business," said Lucas. "The future of work looks like models. Frontier models, brilliant. They're going to get better. There are prompts and responses that get routed back and forth to computers, phones, through APIs and agents. We know that we've already figured this out. Now it's not just about these public frontier models that exist. Here's what I know is this is happening in real time. If you go to Hugging Face and you look at models, there are millions of open weight models and domain specific models. We figured this out. Now the challenge is, well, where do I run the open weight models? Do I run those in my own cloud, on premise? Do I do in the sovereign data center? And the same thing for domain specific models? The point is, all of these things exist together."

In the end, open weight models win, argued Lucas.

"They cost money to run from a compute standpoint, but they are profoundly less expensive. Do we continue to pay every year 10 times what we did last year for a proprietary frontier model? Or do we start to do what enterprises always do, which is pursue the lowest economic option with the highest rate of return economics? ROI always wins. It will profoundly supersede AI at all times."

As open weight models reach capability equilibrium then the economics kick in. "I'm not saying AI is a commodity, but it's kind of playing out like that," said Lucas. "Which model is the right model? The answer is, all of them working together as hemispheres of an enterprise brain doing the things that they are good at doing," said Lucas. "You'll need enterprise grade intelligent prompt routing that distributes prompts, requests, actions and activities to the right model with the most economically productive outcome. Just like two years ago when we told you millions of agents will exist in the enterprise, intelligent prompt routing will play a dominant role in your world."
