Bio

Marty Lippert is Executive Vice President and Head of Global Technology and Operations (GTO) at MetLife and leads MetLife Holdings, which manages the closed-book business of our former U.S. Retail segment. As head of GTO, Lippert oversees MetLife’s digital strategy and customer service for its 100 million customers and global operations in nearly 50 countries. He also manages global technology and corporate services such as real estate and physical security and supervises more than half the company’s associates excluding sales agents. He is also the company’s sponsor for organizational health and its lead representative for U.S. veterans affairs.

Prior to joining MetLife, Lippert served as Chief Operations and Technology Officer for Citigroup. In this role, he was responsible for a global organization with over 150,000 employees and a budget in excess of $21 billion. While at Citi, Lippert served as a member of Citigroup’s Executive Committee and interfaced with regulators on a wide range of issues including anti-money laundering and risk.

Prior to Citigroup, Lippert served as the Vice Chairman for Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), the fourth-largest financial institution in North America. In his role, Lippert had responsibility for several of RBC’s business divisions, including Correspondent Banking, Cash Management, Payments, Trade Finance and Global Custody. In Cash Management, he took a declining business and revamped the product set including delivering one of the first internet-based cash management products in North America. In Global Custody, he grew assets under administration from $650 billion to $2.3 trillion and was ranked as the top service provider in the industry. With respect to Payments, Lippert drove a joint venture to create a path of growth for RBC into the U.S. market, growing the business to become the fourth largest payment processor in North America in four years. At RBC, Lippert also had oversight of the company’s $500 million technology venture fund.

Lippert began his career at Mellon Bank in progressively responsible positions including Chief Financial Officer of the technology division, culminating in his being named Executive Vice President for Information Management and Research.

Lippert was a special advisor to the Board of Freddie Mac during the financial crisis, and sits on the Board of Advisors of the IBM Corporation, Oracle and Accel Venture Capital Partners. He served as Chairman of the Board for AOL Canada, and was a member of the Board of Directors for Trillium Health System, one of Canada’s largest health care providers. He also serves on the Board of Directors for New Leaders, a not-for-profit focused on improving education results for poor and minority students.

Lippert was awarded the Peter J. Kight Lifetime Achievement Award for Innovation in Banking. He has been recognized by American Banker as the top technology executive in North America on several occasions and Business 2.0 ranked him as one of the top 10 technology executives globally.

Lippert holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
