Future of Work: Employee Experience

The Problem

During the pandemic, La Vie en Rose, like many others within the retail industry, faced a dilemma: the global labor shortage impacted the organization’s employee retention and recruitment efforts. As a forward-thinking employer and a major fashion player in Canada, La Vie en Rose has always prioritized the employee experience. Recognizing that its people were its greatest asset, the company sought to expand its employee benefits to make La Vie en Rose one of the best places to work in retail.

From the employee’s perspective, the pandemic has caused many to live under incredible financial stress. A large percentage of Canadian workers across all income levels live paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet. If caught in a situation in between pay cycles where they cannot pay for an unexpected life event, many have no choice but to succumb to high-interest credit card debt or payday loans. This has heightened many working Canadians’ desire for financial wellness benefits, challenging employers like La Vie en Rose to look at ways to implement non-health-related benefits that prioritize employees’ financial well-being.

The Solution

La Vie en Rose recognized the importance of promoting financial wellness as a part of a holistic employee experience strategy. As an existing user of Ceridian’s HCM platform, Dayforce, the company was eager to implement the vendor’s latest on-demand pay solution, Dayforce Wallet, when it launched in Canada in 2021. Since Dayforce Wallet runs on the Dayforce platform’s continuous calculation engine, the implementation process was seamless. Neither La Vie en Rose nor its employees are charged fees for using Dayforce Wallet.

With this partnership, La Vie en Rose’s Canadian employees can claim their earned wages at the end of any day through the Dayforce Wallet mobile app and accompanying debit card. This instant access to earned wages has reduced employees’ dependency on high-interest credit cards and loans, empowering them to take ownership of their financial well-being.

The results

Technology is at the core of an employee’s experience at La Vie en Rose – they use it to clock in and out, check their schedules, request time off, view their pay, and communicate with their manager. To continuously deliver that “wow-factor” experience, modern technology is crucial.

From a technical perspective, being integrated through Dayforce, La Vie en Rose was fortunate that there were little to no changes to existing payroll processes. This is made possible as each on-demand pay request is processed in compliance with federal and provincial remittance requirements through Ceridian’s continuous calculation engine. Combined with other financial wellness benefits like RRSP matching and financial coaching, Dayforce Wallet represents a critical asset to the company’s recruitment and retention strategy.

From a user perspective, employee adoption rates have been overwhelmingly positive. As many were already accustomed to using the Dayforce mobile app to address all their employment needs, they found it efficient to have direct access to their payroll through Dayforce Wallet.

Metrics

As adoption grows, La Vie en Rose believes innovative technologies like Dayforce Wallet that create a consumerized employee experience are continuing to support positive employee engagement, retention, and performance. Since going live with Dayforce Wallet in 2021, La Vie en Rose has seen the following usage:

  • Total number of employees registered: 541
  • Total number of on-demand payroll Requests: 3,289
  • Total amount of funds loaded on-demand: $352,873
  • Daily average of funds accessed on-demand: $107

The Technology

Dayforce Wallet is a modern way to pay employees, giving them access to their earned wages at any time. An extension of Dayforce Payroll, it provides employees access to their earned wages on-demand, with an intuitive mobile app and accompanying prepaid card. Dayforce Wallet can be used for on-demand pay requests, regular payroll using the Dayforce Prepaid Mastercard®, as well as other off-cycle payments.

Disruptive Factor

As an existing Dayforce user, La Vie en Rose saw Dayforce Wallet as a natural addition to the company’s employee experience strategy. The implementation process was seamless – the company was able to roll out Dayforce Wallet to its employees in a matter of weeks.

More importantly, unlike other on-demand pay providers in the industry, Dayforce Wallet does not charge any fees to the employer or employee. To protect both the employer and employee, the solution we made available was unique as employees had to satisfy all required deductions and garnishments before earnings can be made available on the app.

In the competition for talent with the tight labor market, on-demand pay will help differentiate La Vie en Rose from competitors to both current and prospective employees.

Shining Moment

Today, La Vie en Rose’s employees are using Dayforce Wallet to access their earned wages for groceries, convenience stores, fast food, restaurants, gas, and ATM withdrawals. As adoption grows, La Vie en Rose believes innovative technologies like Dayforce Wallet will continue to support positive employee engagement, retention, and performance for both current and prospective workers.
