The Problem

There are many variables that factor into running a global cargo service. Companies must take into account weather conditions, geospatial information, warranty claims, crane performance, points of exchanges and more. All of this information is collected by Cargotec to help ensure quality performance. The challenge Cargotec faced was pooling these various data points into one place for a comprehensive view. The company wanted to take their services-based business to the next level. That required the ability to more quickly and clearly see correlations in data and across multiple factors to predict where the next issue might come from and proactively act on it to cut down on cost, prevent any downtime and avoid serious or potential failures.

The Solution

To solve the challenge of pooling varied, real-time data points into one view for a comprehensive approach to improving and ultimately growing their business, Cargotec built an IoT-as-a-Service platform, jointly developed with Cloudera, a global provider of the leading data management and analytics platform built on Apache Hadoop, and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), provider of IT services and digital and business solutions.

The results

The new platform brings together streams of data across the millions of cargo handling equipment in use to enable remote monitoring of these assets and support predictive maintenance. Cargotec now has a more comprehensive picture of how to improve utilization and reduce unplanned equipment downtime with a rich, comprehensive view of issues related to cargo handling. This new platform sets an example for how the cargo industry can take advantage of the industrial IoT.

Metrics

Cargotec and its subsidiaries have delivered 0.5 million loader cranes to customers, service a quarter of the world’s 600 million containers in use, and offer engineering solutions and services for half of the world’s ships to make transport by sea safe and reliable. This solution opens doors to data-based information that many of these industrial companies have never seen before. It helps customers learn how their cranes are performing in different weather conditions, understand how usage relates to failure rates and even detect anomalies in transport systems.

The Technology

Cargotec’s IoT-as-a-Service platform, jointly developed with Cloudera and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Disruptive Factor

Enterprises are beginning to realize the monumental business impacts that the industrial IoT can bring to productivity, efficiency and operations. Cargotec’s IoT-as-a-Service platform embraces this movement by enabling its partners and customers to conceptualize entirely new ways of doing business, increasing operational efficiencies and driving revenue through an IoT-powered solution. Success of this IoT deployment is seen through Cargotec’s ability to gain insights that were not possible to achieve before. In partnership with Cloudera, an industry leader in data management and analytics, Cargotec is uniquely positioned to help companies reach their IoT goals.

Shining Moment

Cargotec’s IoT-as-a-Service platform is a cloud-based, sensor data analytics framework based on Cloudera Enterprise, that can ingest data from equipment and fleet management, pull in weather patterns and forecasts, and contrast geography — all to perform key analysis for remote monitoring, predictive equipment maintenance, and anomaly detection, all in real-time.
